Carbon Nanotube Sponges |

![]() Carbon Nanotube Sponges Researchers at the Peking and Tsinghua Universities have engineered carbon nanotubes into a sponge-like material that can absorb up to 180 times its own weight in toxic waste without absorbing any water. The nanosponge is expected to have applications in environmental cleanup operations. If conventional dispersants are dropped into the middle of an oil or chemical spill the spill they will simply absorb into the water, whereas nanosponges would mop up the spill, after which they could theoretically be squeezed dry (as demonstrated below) and reused.
